His Excellency the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed met with IDOM Consulting Engineering Architecture SAU – the consultants appointed to provide consultancy services for the light rail network project – to discuss the project’s timeline and deliverables in order to proceed with the necessary studies and architectural designs. The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary of Land Transportation and Post Engineer Mariam Jumaan as well as advisors and members of the land transport team.
According to preliminary studies, the first phase of the light rail network is estimated to cover 25km and a passenger capacity of 8000-10,000 per hour in each direction. Based on these studies, the consultants will be reviewing and identifying the best routes and drawing plans and designs including the network development phases, routes, specification and technology, different procurement options, budget and drafting an RFP which will set the minimum functional requirements for the first phase.
This project comes as part of the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ strategic objective to providing alternative and modern transport solutions that will assist in alleviating rising traffic congestion in the Kingdom.
