The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorology Directorate reported in its monthly weather summary that January 2017 was warmer than normal in temperatures and below average precipitation, wind speed, and relative humidities.

The mean temperature of the month was 18.7°C which is 1.7°C above the long-term normal and the mean maximum temperature of the month was 21.3°C.

The highest temperature recorded in the month was 26.0°C which was on the 9th of January at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 27.2°C on the 1st of January at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 16.1°C with only 8 days with minimum temperatures below 15°C were recorded.

The lowest temperature recorded was 13.2°C which was on the 26th of January at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 10.1°C on the same night in Durrat Al Bahrain. It is worth noting that the lowest temperature ever recorded in Bahrain during the month of January was 2.7°C which occurred on the 20th of January in 1964 at Bahrain International Airport but reached lower than zero degrees Celsius in the Southern areas during that day.

The mean relative humidity recorded during January was 68%; the mean maximum relative humidity was 82% whereas the mean minimum relative humidity was 50%.

Only 0.3 mm of precipitation was reported during January 2017 with trace amounts reported on the 19th of January at Bahrain International Airport. The long-term average precipitation for January is 14.5 mm and the highest monthly precipitation ever recorded in January was 135.9 mm which occurred in January 1959.

The prevailing wind was 38% from the Northwest direction with gusts reaching 29 knots on the 5th and 24th of January at the Bahrain International Airport and also reached 29 knots on the 29th and 30th of January at King Fahd Causeway.

Mist affected the Kingdom on the 11th of January which reduced visibility to 1000 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
